The 2026 Budget Effect my 2026 Tax Return

Will my tax return be impacted the Budget announcement

Yes, but it depends on which tax return you're talking about.

If you mean your 2025–26 tax return (lodged from July 2026)

Most of the major Budget 2026 measures will not affect this return because they start from 1 July 2026 or later. Your 2025–26 return is based on income earned between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026.

If you mean your 2026–27 tax return (lodged from July 2027)

Then yes, several Budget measures may affect it:

1. Lower income tax rates

The tax rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 falls from 16% to 15% from 1 July 2026. This is already legislated.

For most taxpayers, this means:

  • More take-home pay during 2026–27 if tax is withheld correctly.
  • Potentially a different tax outcome when you lodge your 2026–27 return.

2. Proposed $1,000 instant work-related deduction

The Budget announced a $1,000 instant tax deduction from the 2026–27 income year, allowing eligible workers to claim up to $1,000 without receipts. This measure still requires legislation.

If passed, it would first be claimed in your 2026–27 tax return (lodged from July 2027).

3. Investment property and CGT changes

The major negative gearing and capital gains tax reforms are generally proposed to start from 1 July 2027, so they would mainly affect future years rather than the 2026–27 return. Existing investments are expected to receive grandfathering protections.

For most employees

If you're a wage earner with no investment properties or trusts, the main Budget impacts are:

  • The tax rate reduction from 1 July 2026.
  • Potential access to the proposed $1,000 deduction if it becomes law.
